Shelter Cove Area Recreation Master Plan

Revillagegido Island, AK

Knot Studio’s robust analysis of 8,000 acres within the Tongass National Forest identified spatial opportunities and constraints for this working forest on the cusp of opening up the area with a new connector road. The planning area contains a diverse suite of landscape features including four lakes, salmon streams, an old-growth forest, a cove with a boat dock, muskegs, and cultural resources. Working with an interdisciplinary team from the USDA Forest Service Region 10 State Office and the Ketchikan Misty Fjords Ranger District, Knot Studio identified project-specific goals and objectives including visitor experience, natural and cultural resources, and recreation management. The planning team used physical, ecological, and management analyses; engaged public commentary; and developed diverse recreation opportunities.
